Broncos' Defensive Masterclass Secures Victory Over Blue Bears

SALISBURY, NC -- The Fayetteville State women's basketball team showcased their defensive dominance on Saturday, holding Livingstone to a mere 15.4 percent from beyond the arc in a 57-49 victory over the Blue Bears. This win on the road was a testament to the Broncos' resilience and strategic play.

The Broncos, boasting a record of 17-7 overall and 12-3 in the CIAA, were led by a trio of standout performances. Talia Trotter spearheaded the offense with 14 points and six rebounds. Ashara Hayes delivered a stellar double-double, contributing 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Nyah Wilkins added a spark off the bench with 12 points and three steals.

From the outset, Fayetteville State demonstrated their dominance on the boards, out-rebounding Livingstone 51-43. Morgan Graham was a force in the paint, pulling down 13 rebounds. The Broncos' aggressive play on the offensive glass resulted in 19 offensive rebounds, translating into 11 second-chance points.

Defensively, Fayetteville State was relentless, forcing 17 turnovers and converting those into 12 points. KaNyah O'Neal led the defensive charge with four steals, setting the tone for the Broncos' suffocating defense.

The game began with Livingstone taking an early 12-9 lead, but Fayetteville State responded with a decisive 9-0 run, seizing an 18-12 advantage. The Broncos capitalized on six Livingstone turnovers in the first quarter, turning them into six points and ending the period with an 18-14 lead.

In the second quarter, the Broncos maintained their edge, entering halftime with a 33-29 lead. Fayetteville State's dominance in the paint was evident, as they scored 12 of their 15 points close to the basket.

The third quarter saw the Broncos extend their lead with a quick 5-0 run, highlighted by a basket from Hayes, pushing the score to 38-29. Although Livingstone managed to cut into the lead, Fayetteville State still held a 42-39 advantage heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Broncos sealed the victory by outscoring the Blue Bears 15-10. Fayetteville State's ability to capitalize on opportunities in the post was crucial, as they scored 10 of their 15 points in the paint.

Morgan Kelson was the standout performer for Livingstone, scoring 18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Despite her efforts, the Blue Bears fell short, dropping to a 9-16 overall record and 7-7 in the CIAA.

The Broncos will now turn their attention to their next challenge, as they prepare to host Claflin at Capel on Wednesday, February 19th at 5:30 PM. This game will be significant, as it marks Senior Night and their final match-up before heading to the CIAA tournament in Baltimore, MD.
