Women's Basketball Falls Short in Road Battle Against Virginia State, 55-46

PETERSBURG, VA --Fayetteville State women's basketball fought back from an early deficit and tied the game in the third quarter, but Virginia State pulled away late to hand the Broncos a 55-46 loss Thursday evening at the Multipurpose Center. The defeat moves Fayetteville State to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in CIAA play, while Virginia State improves to 6-2 and 1-0 in the conference.

Defense was the story for Fayetteville State, which held the Trojans to just 31.3 percent shooting from the field and 20 percent from beyond the arc (2-for-10). The Broncos also won the battle on the boards, out-rebounding Virginia State 39-36, including 11 offensive rebounds that led to six second-chance points. Despite those efforts, turnovers and missed opportunities proved costly as the Broncos shot 32.1 percent and committed 24 turnovers.

KaNyah O'Neal led Fayetteville State with seven points, eight rebounds, and a game-high six steals. Talia Trotter added eight points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while Taleah Stephens provided a spark off the bench with eight points and seven boards. Amina Miles chipped in six points on 3-of-4 shooting.

Virginia State countered with a balanced attack led by Kiara Beal, who scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting and added four rebounds. Michaela Lane posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Kendahl Spearman contributed seven points and four steals. The Trojans capitalized on second-chance opportunities, scoring 16 points off offensive rebounds and converting 14 points off Fayetteville State turnovers.

The Broncos fell behind 12-5 after the first quarter and trailed 23-16 at halftime. Fayetteville State came out strong in the third period, using a 7-0 run to tie the game at 23 with 6:53 remaining. However, Virginia State regained control and carried a 39-35 lead into the fourth quarter. The Trojans sealed the win with timely baskets and free throws down the stretch, outscoring Fayetteville State 16-11 in the final frame.

Fayetteville State scored 30 of its 46 points in the paint and forced 16 Virginia State turnovers, but couldn't overcome its own miscues and cold shooting from deep (2-for-15).

The Broncos will look to bounce back quickly as they travel to Bluefield State on Monday, December 15. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. Fans can follow the game on social media and watch live at FSUBroncos.com/gameday.
