RALEIGH, NC -- The Fayetteville State women's basketball team capitalized on Shaw's turnovers to secure a 65-51 victory on the road Thursday. The Broncos (10-6, 5-2 CIAA) were led by Keayna McLaughlin, who scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Talia Trotter added 15 points and six assists, while KaNyah O'Neal contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals off the bench.
Shaw (5-11, 3-4 CIAA) was led by D'Ayzha Atkinson, who scored nine points and grabbed three rebounds, and Kaylee Milburn, who added eight points and four rebounds.
Fayetteville State fell behind early, trailing 19-7, but a 5-0 run late in the first quarter cut the deficit to 19-12. The Broncos continued to chip away in the second quarter, narrowing the gap to 30-27 by halftime.
Shaw extended its lead to 44-39 in the third quarter, but Fayetteville State responded with a 6-0 run to take a 45-44 lead heading into the final period. The Broncos dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring Shaw 20-7 to secure the win.
Fayetteville State's defense was a key factor, holding Shaw to just 30.8 percent shooting from the field. The Broncos also dominated the offensive glass, collecting 20 offensive rebounds, which led to 12 second-chance points. Additionally, they scored 23 points off Shaw's 20 turnovers and added 13 fast-break points.
Fayetteville State's ability to convert Shaw's turnovers into points and their dominance on the offensive boards was crucial in their victory. The Broncos' balanced scoring and strong defensive effort helped them overcome an early deficit and pull away in the final quarter.
