Durham, NC – The Fayetteville State women's track & field program collected 46 points with four events scored to lead the first day of competition at the CIAA Track and Field Championships at the Durham County Memorial Stadium in Durham, NC.
M'Smrya Seward, the CIAA Field Athlete of the Year, won the long jump with a leap of 6.09 meters.
The Broncos scored 19 points in the finals of the 1500 meters with
Irene Jeptoo,
Nia Gibson, and
Repline Cheptoo finishing second through fourth, respectively. Fourteen points came from the long jumps with Sewards' ten points and four points from
Mia Thompson.
Ashley Taylor finished second (8 points) in the shot put with a personal best throw of 12.85 meters.
Alexia Bryant and
Ariyah Wheless combined for five points in the javelin.
Virginia State ranks second with 26 points and Shaw third at 22.
Fayetteville State is stacked in tomorrow's finals of the 800 meters with
Viola Korir running a personal record time of 2:16.38 in the preliminaries. Gibson, Cheptoo, and
Ashley Bell will join her in finals.
Four athletes will represent FSU in all of tomorrow's finals except the 100 meters, 100m hurdles, and 400 meters. Those events will have one Bronco in each race.
Janya Moore and
Tramoni Myles qualified for the 200m finals with PR times of 24.02 and 24.88, respectively.
