Fayetteville State shoots 52.6 percent from deep, defeats Johnson C. Smith 88-57

FAYETTEVILLE, NC --The Fayetteville State men's basketball team shot 52.6 percent from beyond the arc on the way to an 88-57 win over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls at home Thursday.

The Broncos (14-10, 9-5) had four players score in double figures, led by Tairell Fletcher, who had 25 points and six assists. Caleb Simmons added 18 points, seven rebounds and two steals and Kaleb Coleman helped out with 13 points and nine rebounds.

The Golden Bulls (11-10, 6-8) were led by Avery Huggins who scored 10 points and had 3 rebounds.

The Fayetteville State offense was very productive from beyond the arc, pouring in 10 threes on 19 attempts. Coleman was the most prolific shooter for the Broncos, draining three treys in the contest.

Fayetteville State's defense held Johnson C. Smith to only 36.8 percent shooting from the field, including 15.4 percent from beyond the arc.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 33-23 advantage, Fayetteville State went on a 7-0 run with 2:14 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Simmons, to increase its lead to 40-23. The Broncos then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 44-25 advantage. Fayetteville State capitalized on 10 Johnson C. Smith turnovers in the period, turning them into 16 points on the other end of the floor.

Following intermission, Fayetteville State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 59-37 before going on a 9-0 run to grow the lead to 68-37 with 10:41 to go in the contest. The Broncos held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 88-57 win. Fayetteville State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 15 of its 44 total points.
