RALEIGH, NC --Caleb Simmons notched a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds, but the Fayetteville State men's basketball team fell to the Shaw Bears 76-63 on the road Tuesday.
In addition to Simmons' impressive output, the Broncos (13-10, 8-5) were led by Tairell Fletcher, who had 18 points and six rebounds, and by Khalil Ridges, who added five points and two steals.
The Bears (11-10, 7-6) leading scorer, DJ Thomas, contributed 13 points.
Led by Simmons' seven offensive rebounds, Fayetteville State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 16 boards that resulted in 18 second chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 21-11, Fayetteville State went on a 6-0 run with 5:58 left in the first half to narrow its deficit to 21-17. Shaw answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Broncos down 31-24 entering halftime.
Shaw kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 64-49 advantage before Fayetteville State went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 64-55 with 3:02 to go in the contest. Shaw responded and outscored the Broncos the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 76-63. Fayetteville State took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 39 points in the lane.
