FAYETTEVILLE, NC --Kaleb Coleman and Caleb Simmons combined to score 41 total points - 65.1 percent of Fayetteville State's points - in the Broncos 63-48 win against the Saint Augustine's Falcons at home Saturday.
Coleman led the Broncos (13-9, 8-4) with 23 points. Simmons added 18 points and Tairell Fletcher helped out with six points.
Joshua Johnson led the Falcons (11-11, 7-5) with 10 points.
Coleman pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead the Fayetteville State offense which grabbed 10 boards and turned them into 11 second chance points.
Fayetteville State's defense held Saint Augustine's to only 36.2 percent shooting from the field, including 29.4 percent from beyond the arc. The Falcons did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with five offensive rebounds and managed seven second chance points while Fayetteville State cleared 28 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 17-7 advantage, Fayetteville State went on an 8-0 run with 3:49 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Marcus Elliott, to increase its lead to 25-7. The Broncos then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 26-9 advantage. Fayetteville State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 26 points close to the basket.
Fayetteville State kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Coleman's three, to grow the lead to 49-31 with 6:59 to go in the contest. The Falcons narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Broncos still cruised the rest of the way for the 63-48 win. Fayetteville State took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 37 points in the lane.
