SHIPPENSBURG, PA – The Fayetteville State women's basketball team delivered a dominant performance, defeating the Kutztown Golden Bears 61-37 at Heiges Field House on Saturday.
The Broncos (2-0) were led by Talia Trotter, who scored 12 points, and Nyah Wilkins, who added 11 points off the bench. Morgan Graham contributed nine points and six rebounds, while Keayna McLaughlin grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and dished out four assists.
Fayetteville State's defense was stellar, holding Kutztown (1-3 overall) to just 19 percent shooting from the field and forcing 18 turnovers, which they converted into 24 points. The Broncos also excelled in ball movement, recording assists on 76 percent of their made baskets. The bench played a crucial role, contributing 26 points to the team's total.
After trailing 10-8, Fayetteville State went on a 7-0 run late in the first quarter to take a 15-10 lead, eventually ending the quarter ahead 15-13. The Broncos dominated the paint, scoring 10 of their 15 first-quarter points inside.
Kutztown rallied to an 18-10 lead in the second quarter, but Fayetteville State responded with a 7-0 run to close the gap to 18-17. The Broncos continued their momentum, taking a 25-20 lead into halftime, thanks to a free throw from Kanyah O'Neal.
In the third quarter, Kutztown briefly took a 27-18 lead before Fayetteville State's 10-0 run, highlighted by a basket from Graham, put them ahead 28-27. The Broncos extended their lead to 41-29 by the end of the quarter, scoring 12 of their 16 points in the paint, and continued to dominate in the fourth quarter, sealing the victory with a final score of 61-37.
