BOWIE, MD – The Fayetteville State men's basketball team experienced a dramatic 70-68 defeat against the Clarion (PA) Golden Eagles at A.C. Jordan Arena on Saturday. The game was decided by a buzzer-beating shot from Clarion's Trey Nelson with just four seconds left on the clock.
The Broncos, now 1-1 for the season, saw impressive performances from Ezekiel Cannedy, who led the team with 24 points and two steals, and Tairell Fletcher, who added 23 points and four assists. Javon Floyd also made significant contributions with five points, eight rebounds, and two blocks.
Fayetteville State excelled in rebounding, securing 35 boards compared to Clarion's 34, with Floyd leading the effort. The Broncos were particularly effective on the offensive glass, turning 16 offensive rebounds into 15 second-chance points.
Key moments in the game included a 6-0 run in the first half that helped the Broncos tie the game at 34-34 by halftime. In the second half, Fayetteville State went on a 12-0 run to take a 54-48 lead. However, Clarion managed to regain control, outscoring the Broncos 22-14 in the final minutes, culminating in Nelson's game-winning shot.
Despite the loss, Fayetteville State showed resilience and determination, with Cannedy, Fletcher, and Caleb Simmons combining for 82% of the team's points.
The Broncos will look to bounce back on Wednesday, November 13th, in its home opener against UNC Pembroke at 7 pm.
