Vittoni puts up triple-double in Broncos 3-2 win against Winston-Salem

FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- In a thrilling match at Felton J. Capel Arena, the Fayetteville State volleyball team edged out Winston-Salem State in a five-set battle, winning 3-2 (25-18, 17-25, 23-25, 25-21, 15-13). This victory improved the Broncos' record to 15-4 overall, 11-4 in CIAA action, and 8-2 in the division. Meanwhile, the Rams now hold a 14-10 overall record, 11-5 in CIAA play, and 6-4 in the division.

Chiara Vittoni was the standout performer for Fayetteville State, achieving a remarkable triple-double with 14 kills, 14 digs, and 31 assists. Her all-around performance was crucial in securing the win for the Broncos. Jourdan Page also made significant contributions with 18 kills, while Jasmine Culp anchored the defense with 25 digs. Milana Cvetkovski added three blocks to bolster the Broncos' defensive efforts.

For Winston-Salem State, Lexis Tatum led the charge with 14 kills and 3.5 blocks, showcasing her prowess at the net.

The match began with the Broncos taking the first set 25-18. They gained the lead at 9-8 and never looked back, capitalizing on Winston-Salem's 10 attacking errors. However, the Rams bounced back in the second set, winning 25-17. They took the lead early and maintained it throughout, leveling the match at 1-1.

Winston-Salem continued their momentum in the third set, narrowly winning 25-23. The set saw multiple ties, but the Rams pulled ahead to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Fayetteville State responded in the fourth set, winning 25-21 to force a decisive fifth set. The Broncos took control late in the set, securing the lead at 22-21 and holding on for the win.

The final set was a nail-biter, with the Broncos emerging victorious 15-13. They clinched the lead at 13-12 and held on to complete the comeback and win the match 3-2. This hard-fought victory highlights the resilience and skill of the Fayetteville State team as they continue their impressive season.

Coach Chynna Hunt attributed the victory to the senior leadership, stating, "One word - Seniors. The senior leadership, you can see the heart and passion spill out on the court." Senior A'Lexus Everett also shared her thoughts on staying focused during the match, saying, "Just to play hard and staying aggressive. Wanted to be reliable for my team."

Looking ahead, the Broncos will host the CIAA quarterfinals against Elizabeth City State on Tuesday, November 19th at 6:00 PM in Capel Arena.
