Fayetteville State Men falls 71-63 to Johnson C. Smith

CHARLOTTE, NC --The Fayetteville State men's basketball team fell 71-63 to the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (8-13 overall, 4-8 CIAA, and 3-3 in the South) on the road Saturday.

Kaleb Coleman led the Broncos (13-11, 8-4 CIAA, 4-2 Division) with nine points, seven rebounds and two steals. Cress Worthy added 11 points, six rebounds and four steals and Tony Hauser helped out with six points and seven rebounds.

Cartier Jernigan led JCSU to the victory with 24 points behind 5-of-8 three pointers. Augustine Ominu and Ezekiel Cannedy added ten each.

Fayetteville State pulled down 39 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Johnson C. Smith's 31, led by Coleman's seven boards. The Broncos also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 14 rebounds into 14 second chance points.

Fayetteville State forced 20 Johnson C. Smith turnovers. The Broncos turned those takeaways into 21 points on the offensive end of the floor. Worthy's four steals led the way for Fayetteville State.

How It Happened

After falling behind 12-5, Fayetteville State went on a 10-0 run with 14:09 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Tyler Foster, to take a 15-12 lead. The Broncos then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 26-25 advantage. Fayetteville State capitalized on ten Johnson C. Smith turnovers in the period, turning them into seven points on the other end of the floor.

Johnson C. Smith proceeded to take a 65-43 lead before Fayetteville State went on a 10-0 run, finished off by Joshua Wiggins' layup, to shrink the deficit to 65-53 with 2:10 to go in the contest. The Broncos kept their comeback going, but Johnson C. Smith managed to hold on for the 71-63 win. Fayetteville State capitalized on 10 Johnson C. Smith turnovers in the period, collecting 14 points off those turnovers.
