BLUEFIELD, WV --The Fayetteville State women's basketball team kept Bluefield State to just 5.6 percent from beyond the arc in a 1-for-18 shooting performance on the way to a 67-49 win against the Lady Blues on the road Monday.
The Broncos (9-1 overall, 3-0 CIAA) had two players score in double figures, led by Aniylah Bryant, who had 18 points and three steals. Keayna McLaughlin added 15 points, seven rebounds and two steals and Morgan Graham added eight points, seven rebounds and five blocks.
Fayetteville State out-rebounded Bluefield State 50-35 in Monday's game, paced by seven boards from Ashara Hayes. The Broncos also grabbed 16 offensive rebounds and scored 12 second chance points.
Fayetteville State did a great job disrupting Bluefield State shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Graham's five rejections led the way individually for the Broncos.
Bluefield State (8-3 overall, 1-2 CIAA) was led by Alexyss Newman with 18 points.
How It Happened
Fayetteville State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Bluefield State kept adding to that lead, building a 19-11 advantage before Fayetteville State went on a 16-0 run, highlighted by a three from Talia Trotter, to take a 27-19 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Fayetteville State dominated in the paint, scoring 16 of its 20 points close to the basket.
Bluefield State then took a 31-30 lead following intermission before Fayetteville State went on an 11-0 run, punctuated by a basket from McLaughlin, to grab a 41-31 lead with 3:20 to go in the third. The Broncos held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 49-39 edge. Fayetteville State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 22 points in the paint.
Fayetteville State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 52-41 before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by McLaughlin's layup, to grow the lead to 60-41 with 5:21 to go in the contest. The Lady Blues narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Broncos still cruised the rest of the way for the 67-49 win. Fayetteville State took advantage of seven Bluefield State turnovers in the quarter, scoring 11 points off of those takeaways.
