FAYETTEVILLE, NC --Tairell Fletcher hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer as time expired to lead the Fayetteville State men's basketball team past the Augusta Jaguars 77-76 at home Tuesday.
The Broncos (1-1) had three players score in double figures, led by Fletcher, who had 27 points. Caleb Simmons tacked on 17 points and seven rebounds and Kaleb Coleman chipped in as well with 13 points and six rebounds.
Simmons pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead the Fayetteville State offense which grabbed 10 boards and turned them into 13 second chance points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 30-19, Fayetteville State went on a 9-0 run with 5:37 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Mysta Goodloe, to narrow its deficit to 30-28. Augusta answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Broncos down 38-31 entering halftime.
Augusta kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 62-48 advantage before Fayetteville State went on a 15-0 run, finished off by Fletcher's jumper, to seize a 63-62 lead with 6:10 to go in the contest. The Broncos held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 77-76 win. Fayetteville State made the most of six offensive rebounds to tack on 12 second chance points out of 46 total in the period.
