BOWIE, MD | A.C. Jordan Arena --The Fayetteville State men's basketball team got a 43-point showing from the bench, but fell 60-43 to the California (PA) Vulcans at Friday's BSU Tip-Off Classic.
Caleb Simmons put together a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Broncos (0-1). Khalil Ridges tacked on five points, seven rebounds and two steals off of the bench and Kaleb Coleman helped out with nine points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Led by Simmons' six offensive rebounds, Fayetteville State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 17 boards that resulted in 12 second chance points.
The Fayetteville State defense caused its share of mistakes in Friday's game, forcing 21 California (PA) turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 12 points on the other end of the floor. Ridges' two steals led the way individually for the Broncos.
How It Happened
After falling behind 24-16, Fayetteville State went on an 8-0 run with 2:43 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Myles Pierre, to tie the game at 24, a score that would hold until halftime. Fayetteville State took advantage of nine California (PA) turnovers in the period, and scoring seven points of those turnovers.
California (PA) then snagged a 53-33 advantage before Fayetteville State responded by going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Simmons' layup, to shrink the deficit to 53-38 with 8:24 to go in the contest. California (PA) responded and outscored the Broncos the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 60-43. Fayetteville State capitalized on 12 California (PA) turnovers in the period, collecting five points off those turnovers.
