Fayetteville State wins turnover battle and takes down Shippensburg (PA) 68-62

SHIPPENSBURG, PA --The Fayetteville State women's basketball team had 13 fewer turnovers than Shippensburg (PA) in a 68-62 victory against the Red Raiders on the road Friday. This victory marks the first win for Head Coach Tyreece Brown in his first season at the helm.

The Broncos (1-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Aniylah Bryant, who had 15 points, seven rebounds, and eight steals. Morgan Graham tacked on a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Talia Trotter chipped in as well with 11 points and two steals.

Fayetteville State took advantage of excellent ball movement in Friday's game, piling up 15 assists on 25 made field goals. Keayna McLaughlin's five assists paced the Broncos and Trotter also added three assists of her own.

Fayetteville State forced 29 Shippensburg (PA) turnovers while committing 16 themselves in Friday's game. The Broncos turned those takeaways into 29 points on the other end of the floor. Bryant's eight steals led the way for Fayetteville State.

How It Happened

After falling behind 11-9, Fayetteville State went on an 8-0 run with 5:48 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Nyah Wilkins, to take a 17-11 lead. The Broncos then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 19-16 advantage. Fayetteville State did most of its first-quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 19 points close to the basket.

The Broncos could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 32-28.

Fayetteville State came out of halftime rallying and had constructed a 39-34 lead before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a three from Bryant, to expand its lead further to 45-34 with 5:42 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Red Raiders had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Broncos still entered the fourth quarter with a 49-44 edge. Fayetteville State knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 21 total points.

Fayetteville State kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Wilkins' jumper, to grow the lead to 64-57 with 2:16 to go in the contest. The Red Raiders narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Broncos still cruised the rest of the way for the 68-62 win. Fayetteville State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.
