SHIPPENSBURG, PA --The Fayetteville State women's basketball team got a 34-point showing from the bench on the way to a 67-52 win against the Mansfield (PA) Mountaineers at Heiges Field House Saturday.
The Broncos (2-0) had two players score in double figures, led by Morgan Graham, who secured a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Nyah Wilkins tacked on 12 points off the bench and Talia Trotter added nine points and two steals.
Fayetteville State shared the ball well in Saturday's game, racking up 15 assists on 26 made field goals. Individually, Daziyahna Wilson led the way for the Broncos with three assists.
The Fayetteville State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 26 Mansfield (PA) turnovers while committing 21. Those takeaways turned into 26 points on the offensive end of the floor. Keayna McLaughlin led the way individually for the Broncos with three steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 8-6, Fayetteville State went on a 6-0 run with 4:14 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from McLaughlin, to take a 12-8 lead. The Broncos then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-15 advantage. Fayetteville State did most of its first-quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 16 points close to the basket.
Mansfield (PA) rallied to take a 17-16 lead before Fayetteville State went on a 13-0 run starting at the 8:19 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Wilkins, to take a 29-17 lead. The Mountaineers cut into that lead, but the Broncos still enjoyed a 37-29 advantage heading into halftime. Fayetteville State forced six Mansfield (PA) turnovers in the period and turned them into nine points.
Following intermission, Fayetteville State continued to expand its advantage, pushing it to 43-33 before going on an 11-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Aniylah Bryant, to expand its lead further to 54-33 with 2:12 to go in the third. The Broncos held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 57-36 edge. Fayetteville State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 20 points in the paint.
Fayetteville State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Wilson's three, to grow the lead to 65-38 with 4:49 to go in the contest. The Mountaineers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Broncos still cruised the rest of the way for the 67-52 win. Fayetteville State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 10 points.
