Bowie State Women Topples Fayetteville State 45-44 in Final Minute

Fayetteville, NC (February 7, 2022) -- The Fayetteville State women's basketball five-game win-streak was broken this afternoon in Capel Arena as Bowie State escaped with a 45-44 victory in the final minute.

The Broncos (11-9 overall and 8-4 in the CIAA) led 18-11 after the first quarter but let the visiting Bulldogs (10-9, 8-4) even up the game (24-24) at the halftime break.

FSU Rasheka Simmons led the entire game with 16 points, but ten of them were from the first half. She was the only Bronco to score double digits as Aniylah Bryant finished with eight.

The Broncos opened the second half with a 4-0 run and ended the quarter up 35-31.  Simmons stretched the lead to seven (38-31) at the top of the fourth quarter with a basket and one as 9:34 remained on the clock. From that point, Fayetteville State would go silent from the field with its next basket coming from Charisma Barner's layup with 2:51 left. In almost seven minutes, the Broncos only made one of two free throws.

For the game, FSU didn't make many trips to the charity stripe with a total of four of seven free throws made. Bowie State was 15-of-22.

The game reached a pinnacle with 1:54 left and a tied ballgame at 41.  Amani Ball, who led Bowie State with 13 points, made her two free throws at 1:01 for their first lead since the opening field goal of the game. The following points of the game came from Anii Harris and Andria Gadson's free throws. Each of them made 1-of-2 shots.

Before Simmons nailed a three before the final buzzer, FSU missed one field goal and two free throws in the final two and a half minutes.

The Broncos 30.5% (18-59) shooting from the floor was better than Bowie State's 24.5% (12-49). The major difference came from the 14 personal fouls committed by FSU.

Fayetteville State will host Livingstone on Thursday in Capel at 5:30 pm.
