NEWBERRY, SC -- Cress Worthy and Tyler Foster combined to score 41 total points - 64.1 percent of Fayetteville State's points - but the Broncos fell to the Newberry Wolves 71-64 on the road Saturday, December 31, to close out the 2022 calendar year.
The Broncos (7-8 overall) had two players score in double figures, led by Worthy, who had 26 points. Foster tacked on 15 points and Kaleb Coleman added seven points.
Newberry improved to 8-5 on the season with two players scoring in double figures. Quandaveon McCollum led the Wolves with 20 points and Malakhi Stremlow added a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds.
Led by D'Marco Baucum's four offensive rebounds, Fayetteville State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in 11 second chance points.
Fayetteville State's defense held Newberry to only 16.7 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
After falling behind 18-9, Fayetteville State went on a 7-0 run with 7:52 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Jacob Crutchfield, to narrow its deficit to 18-16. The Broncos took a three-point lead (27-24) with 1:54 left in the first half from a fast break three-pointer by Worthy. After a 29-29 tie with 14 seconds left, Newberry went into the locker room with a 31-29 halftime lead.
Newberry kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 64-53 advantage before Fayetteville State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by Isaiah Ray's three, to shrink the deficit to 64-60 with 1:17 to go in the contest. Newberry responded and outscored the Broncos the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 71-64.
