Defensive effort leads Fayetteville State over Elizabeth City State 75-63

FAYETTEVILLE, NC --The Fayetteville State women's basketball team held Elizabeth City State to just 18.2 percent from deep in a 2-for-11 shooting performance on the way to a 75-63 win against the Vikings (7-4 overall, 1-2 CIAA) at home Monday.

The Broncos (7-4, 3-0 CIAA) had four players score in double figures, led by Aniylah Bryant, who had 13 points and five steals. Morgan Graham added 12 points and two blocks and Amina Miles chipped in as well with 11 points and six rebounds off of the bench.

Fayetteville State out-rebounded Elizabeth City State 38-34 in Monday's game, paced by Miles' six boards. The Broncos also grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and scored 17 second chance points.

Fayetteville State's defense held Elizabeth City State to only 18.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 39.7 percent from the field.

How It Happened

After falling behind 11-5, Fayetteville State went on a 17-0 run with 3:54 left in the first quarter to take a 22-11 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Fayetteville State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 22 points close to the basket.

The Broncos maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 38-31 edge. Fayetteville State dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 16 points close to the basket.

Fayetteville State wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Talia Trotter, to expand its lead further to 44-31 with 7:27 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Vikings had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Broncos still entered the fourth quarter with a 53-49 edge. Fayetteville State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.

Fayetteville State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 68-63 before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 75-63 with zero seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Fayetteville State took advantage of four Elizabeth City State turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
