LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA --The Fayetteville State women's basketball team went into halftime beating Lincoln (PA) 34-29, but could not hang on in the second half and fell 58-47 to the Lions on the road Thursday.
The Broncos (7-5, 3-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Keayna McLaughlin, who had 11 points. Aniylah Bryant also added 11 points, six rebounds, two steals and three blocks. Imani Elliott contributed seven points and three steals.
The defending CIAA Champions Lincoln (PA) improves to 8-6 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. The Lions were led by the trio Anyssa Field (13 points), Jaleesa Lanier (12 points), and Ciani Montgomery (12 points). D'Ayzha Atkinson led the game with 10 rebounds.
The Fayetteville State defense forced 19 Lincoln (PA) turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 10 points on the other end of the floor. Elliott's three steals led the way individually for the Broncos.
How It Happened
After falling behind 10-9, Fayetteville State went on a 5-0 run with 6:07 left in the first quarter to take a 14-10 lead. The Broncos then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with an 18-14 advantage. Fayetteville State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 18 points close to the basket.
Lincoln (PA) rallied to take a 29-28 lead before Fayetteville State went on a 6-0 run starting at the 49 seconds mark in the second period to take a 34-29 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Fayetteville State dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 16 points close to the basket.
Fayetteville State surrendered its halftime lead until, with the game tied at 34-34, they went on a 9-0 run to grab a 43-34 lead with 5:50 to go in the third. Lincoln (PA) responded to seize a 44-43 lead entering the fourth quarter.
FSU could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 58-47. Fayetteville State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down one of eight three-pointers to account for three of its four points in the quarter. Lincoln (PA) outscored the Broncos 14-4 in the final stanza.
