Fayetteville State men's basketball falls 65-54 to Virginia State

FAYETTEVILLE, NC --The Fayetteville State men's basketball team got a 23-point performance from the bench, but fell 65-54 to the Virginia State Trojans (8-3 overall, 2-0 CIAA) at home Saturday.

The Broncos (6-7, 1-1 CIAA) had two players score in double figures, led by Tyler Foster, who had 15 points. Kaleb Coleman added 13 points and two steals and D'Marco Baucum added eight points and 14 rebounds.

Fayetteville State out-rebounded Virginia State 38-34 in Saturday's game, led by Baucum's 14 boards. The Broncos also grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and scored nine second chance points.

Fayetteville State forced 14 Virginia State turnovers while committing 13 themselves in Saturday's game. The Broncos turned those takeaways into five points on the other end of the floor. Coleman's two steals led the way for Fayetteville State.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 6-4 advantage, Fayetteville State went on a 7-0 run with 16:05 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Jacob Crutchfield, to increase its lead to 13-4. Virginia State then responded to tie things up at 26-26 heading into halftime. Fayetteville State saw the bench step up in the period, as non-starters registered eight of its 26 total points.

Virginia State then snagged a 52-43 advantage before Fayetteville State responded by going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Foster's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 52-49 with 5:32 to go in the contest. Virginia State responded and outscored the Broncos the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 65-54. Fayetteville State took care of business in the paint, recording 16 of its 28 points in the lane.
