HARTSVILLE, SC --The Fayetteville State women's basketball team fought back from a 39-35 deficit after the third quarter to defeat the Coker Cobras 60-50 on the road Tuesday.
The Broncos (3-2 overall) had three players score in double figures, led by Aniylah Bryant, who had 15 points. Rasheka Simmons added 13 points and four steals from the bench and Keayna McLaughlin chipped in as well with 13 points.
Fayetteville State's defense held Coker to only 10.5 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 29.1 percent from the field.
How It Happened
After falling behind 4-2, Fayetteville State went on a 5-0 run with 4:07 left in the first quarter to take a 7-4 lead. The Broncos then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 13-7 advantage. Fayetteville State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 10 of its 13 points close to the basket.
Fayetteville State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 9:19 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Bryant, to increase its lead to 18-10. The Cobras cut into that lead, but the Broncos still enjoyed a 26-25 advantage heading into halftime. Fayetteville State forced six Coker turnovers in the period and turned them into five points.
Coker then took a 35-26 lead following intermission before Fayetteville State went on a 9-0 run to tie things up at 35 with 1:33 to go in the third. The Broncos could not advance their rally further as the Cobras took a 39-35 lead into the fourth quarter. Fayetteville State took advantage of three Coker turnovers in the quarter, scoring three points off of takeaways.
Fayetteville State managed to gain control and had a 55-50 lead before going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 60-50 with 15 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Fayetteville State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 25 points.
