GREENWOOD, SC --The Fayetteville State women's basketball team held Lander to just 5.9 percent from beyond the arc in a 1-for-17 shooting performance, but fell 54-49 to the Bearcats on the road Sunday.
Rasheka Simmons led the Broncos (3-3) with nine points and seven rebounds. Aniylah Bryant also added nine points and two steals and Daziyahna Wilson helped out with nine points off the bench.
The Fayetteville State defense caused its share of mistakes in Sunday's game, forcing 16 Lander turnovers. Those takeaways turned into four points on the offensive end of the floor. Imani Elliott led the way individually for the Broncos with two steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 15-7, Fayetteville State went on an 8-0 run with 1:56 left in the first quarter to tie the game at 15, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Fayetteville State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 15 points close to the basket.
The Bearcats then took control in the second quarter and the Broncos entered haltime behind 28-19.
After intermission, Fayetteville State cut its deficit to 36-29 before going on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a three from Bryant, to grab a 38-36 lead with 52 seconds to go in the third. The Bearcats then rallied to tie it at 38-38 heading into the fourth quarter. Fayetteville State knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 19 total points.
Lander then snagged a 48-44 advantage before Fayetteville State responded by going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Simmons' three, to seize a 49-48 lead with 1:20 to go in the contest. Lander re-asserted control, outscoring the Broncos 6-0 the rest of the way to hand Fayetteville State the 54-49 loss. Fayetteville State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring seven of its 11 total points.
