Defensive Effort Not Enough as FSU Loses to Shippensburg (PA) 65-42

SHIPPENSBURG, PA --The Fayetteville State women's basketball team kept Shippensburg (PA) to just 39 percent shooting from the field, but fell 65-42 to the Red Raiders on the road Friday in Shippensburg, Pa.

The Broncos (0-1 overall) had two players score in double figures, led by Rasheka Simmons, who had 12 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Aniylah Bryant tacked on 12 points, three steals and two blocks and London Thompson added four points.

Simmons pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second chance opportunities for Fayetteville State, grabbing 13 boards and turning them into 12 second chance points.

Fayetteville State's defense held Shippensburg (PA) shooters to just 39 percent from the field.

How It Happened

Fayetteville State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 17-5 at the end of the first quarter.

The Broncos continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 33-11 halftime deficit.

Shippensburg (PA) continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 49-26 advantage before Fayetteville State went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Bryant, to trim its deficit to 49-31 with three seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Fayetteville State played well near the basket, scoring 16 of its 20 points in the paint.

Shippensburg (PA) kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 54-33 advantage before Fayetteville State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Bryant's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 54-39 with 6:36 to go in the contest. Shippensburg (PA) responded and outscored the Broncos the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 65-42. Fayetteville State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring four of its 11 total points.
