Eleven Broncos Garner All-CIAA Honors at Championship Awards Luncheon

Salem, VA – The Fayetteville State University football program felt pride and honor at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Football Championship Luncheon, but the cheers and celebrations were held to a minimum. Eleven Broncos received All-Conference recognition at the end of the luncheon. Devin Cowan (DE) and Jacob Young (P) were named to the All-Conference First Team while Michael Todd (OL), Tyler Fleming (OL), Barry Elliott (WR), Elton Andrew (PK), Cameron Merrell (DE), Kentrell Caldwell (LB), and Brandon Barnes-Brown (CB) were named to the Second Team. Anthony Binyard (DL) and Derrick Alston, Jr. (RB) were named to the All-CIAA Rookie Team.
 
Devin Cowan, a junior defensive end from Fayetteville, NC, finished the regular season with 55 total tackles with 14 tackles for a loss of 56 yards. He had a total of 8 sacks for 47 yards, two forced fumbles, six quarterback hurries, and two pass deflections.
 
Senior punter Jacob Young, from Spencer, NC, handled most of the punting duties for FSU. He punted 50 times for a total of 2, 057 yards and had a season-long record of 64 yards. Eighteen of his punts landed inside the 20-yard line while two were touchbacks and eight fair catches.
 
Offensive linemen Michael Todd, a redshirt sophomore from Lumberton, NC, and Tyler Fleming, a redshirt junior from Winston-Salem, NC, were key components to the Broncos' total offense. The Broncos ran 619 offensive plays through ten games for a total of 2,840 yards (284 yards of total offense per game). The ground attack amassed 1,442 yards and the passing game accounted for 1,418. FSU scored a total of 31 touchdowns and 239 points.
 
Barry Elliott, a junior wide receiver from Fayetteville, was the go-to receiver for the Broncos with 22 receptions for 505 yards in ten games. He had eight receiving touchdowns and the longest catch of 83 yards. He rushed the ball on reversals three times for 20 yards and a touchdown.
 
Senior place-kicker Elton Andrew (Salemburg, NC) made 26-of-28 extra point kicks for the season. He also handled kickoff duties with 49 kicks. Seventeen of those kicks landed for touchbacks. Andrew punted 13 times for 497 yards. He made 9-of-19 field goals in nine games.
 
Cameron Merrell, a red-shirt junior at the defensive end position, is a native of Atlanta, Ga. He finished the regular season with a team-high 74 total tackles. Merrell also led the team with 12.5 tackles for a loss of 63 yards and 8.5 sacks for 47 yards. He added three quarterback hurries, two fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble.
 
Linebacker Kentrell Caldwell, a sophomore from Newberry, SC, finished nine games with the team's second-most tackles at 57. He had 7 stops for a loss of 22 yards, 1 sack for five yards, 3 pass breakups, an interception, and a forced fumble.
 
Brandon Barnes-Brown rounds out the All-Conference accolades. The graduate student from Charlotte, NC was a lock-down cornerback for the Broncos this season. He finished with a total of 20 tackles, 4 pass breakups, and two interceptions for a return of 20 yards.

Defensive lineman Anthony Binyard, from Winston-Salem, NC, was named to the CIAA All-Rookie Team. The redshirt freshman has 29 tackles with 10.5 for a loss of 34 yards. He also has 3.5 sacks for 18 yards, two quarterback hurries, and a fumble recovery.
 
Redshirt freshman Derrick Alston, Jr. (from Raleigh, NC) rushed for 366 yards so far this season from 59 carries. He has 3 touchdowns and the longest rush of 62 yards. Alston was on the receiving end of 6 passes where he gained 46 yards.
 
Fayetteville State University will vie for the 2022 CIAA Football Championship title Saturday, November 12 at 1 pm in the Salem Stadium in Salem, Va.  The game will be broadcast nationally on Aspire TV and online at www.theciaasn.com at a pay-per-view rate of $14.95.
