Fayetteville, NC (January 23, 2022) – Despite a spectator-less Felton J. Capel Arena, the Fayetteville State versus Winston-Salem State rivalry supplied an intensity that fueled the game well into the final minutes of a Rams 62-57 victory in women's basketball. Free-throw performances made the greatest impact in the final stanza.
The Broncos (6-8 overall, 3-3 CIAA) were unable to regain control following a pair of free-throws by the Rams' (8-6 overall, 4-3 in the conference) Melody Prichard with 41 seconds left and a 56-55 lead.
WSSU's Brooke Spaulding led the game with 21 points with O'Shae Hatley adding 16 points.
Rasheka Simmons scored 19 points for the FSU Broncos and Morgan Graham contributed 11.
After trailing 58-55, Imani Elliott's layup through traffic cut the deficit to one with 19 seconds left.
A bucket by Prichard put the Rams up 60-57 with six seconds left. Spaulding sealed the game with two free-throws to end the game.
In the fourth quarter alone, the Rams shot 72.7% from the free-throw line over the Broncos' effort of 60%.
The Broncos will make up a previously scheduled game versus Virginia Union on Tuesday starting at 5:30 p.m.
