Fayetteville, NC (Tuesday, January 25, 2022) – Fayetteville State utilized a strong inside presence to improve to 7-8 overall and 4-3 in the CIAA with a 60-47 victory over Virginia Union, who dropped to 4-9 and 2-5 in the conference. FSU dominated the Panthers in the paint with a 38-8-point difference and 12-3 in second-chance points.
Three Broncos finished in double digits with
Aniylah Bryant leading the game with 15 points. Sophomore
Charisma Barner scored a season-high 14 points and
Imani Elliott finished with 11.
After a close first quarter (10-8), Fayetteville State increased its lead to eight at the half with a 30-22 score. The Broncos' defense forced 17 Virginia Union turnovers and converted them to 23 points. FSU maintained a double-digit lead for the majority of the third quarter and all of the fourth quarter. The largest lead of the game (60-45, 15 points) was achieved with 30 seconds left in the game.
Four Panthers score nine points in the effort.
Fayetteville State will travel to Claflin University in Orangeburg, South Carolina on Thursday for a 5:30 game. FSU will return for its fourth game within a week for a home divisional game against Saint Augustine's on Saturday at 2 pm.
