Charlotte, NC (January 15, 2022) – It has been three weeks and five days since the last time Fayetteville State squared up against an opponent. Twenty-six days ago, the Broncos laid it to Elizabeth City State 69-50 in the R.L. Vaughn Center. This Saturday evening in the Brayboy Gymnasium, FSU put to Johnson C. Smith 75-53 to improve to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in the CIAA.
Four Broncos scored double figures compared to two Golden Bulls.
Jalen Seegars, who averages 17.6 points per game, scored a season-high 27 points while
Zion Cousins dropped his first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Cress Worthy and
Darian Dixon scored a dozen points each. Dixon made his first game appearance since December 4
th.
Fayetteville State out-rebounded Johnson C. Smith, 40-26, which directly attributed to 18 second-chance points over JCSU's four. The Golden Bulls only had six offensive boards while FSU had 15.
The Broncos were 47% from the field (31-66) over JCSU's 41.2 (21-51) and had a definite scoring advantage with eight made three-pointers to the Golden Bulls four.
Johnson C. Smith, who now has an 0-4 conference standing and a 3-9 overall record, opened the game with a 5-0 run behind an opening three-pointer and a dunk on their next possession. Following Seegars' second three-pointer of the game, the Broncos would a 16-14 lead (at 11:18) and proceed on a 12-4 run for a 28-18 advantage with 5:14 left in the half. The lead would balloon to 16 (42-26) before halftime intermission.
It would be all Fayetteville State in the second half as the Broncos went on to lead by as many as 28 (69-41) with four minutes left in the game.
Fayetteville State will travel to Salisbury on Wednesday, January 19 for a 7:30 game against Livingstone (6-5 overall, 3-2 CIAA).
