Overtime Buzzer Beater Dooms Fayetteville State in 63-61 Loss to ECSU

Rocky Mount, NC – Fayetteville State met up its sister institution Elizabeth City State in a non-conference showdown in Rocky Mount, NC in the 252 Down East Invitational. The event, full of high school basketball, came to a climactic end in the feature presentation of CIAA Women's Basketball.
 
After an Elizabeth City State University (5-0 overall) timeout following a pair of missed free throws with two seconds left in overtime, Aniyah Vanhook nailed a game-winner near the top of the key lifting the Vikings over Fayetteville State (2-3 overall), 63-61.
 
Vanhook led the game with 15 points while NyAsia Blango and Tirenique Broadwater contributed 13 each for Elizabeth City State.
 
Imani Elliott led Fayetteville State with a dozen points as the Broncos led 35-24 at halftime. Fayetteville State led by seven (55-48) in the fourth quarter (5:50 left) on Aniylah Bryant's eighth point and final field goal of the game. She hit a free throw before regulation ended for a game total of nine points, six steals, and two assists.
 
The game was sent into overtime with a Vikings' 6-1 run to the buzzer. Elizabeth City State continued their momentum in the extra period with a three-ball by Blango (59-56).
 
Mikaela Jones, who finished with nine points, four rebounds, and three blocks, scored on a put-back layup. On the following possession, Elliott made one of two free throws to tie the game (59-59) after being fouled on a stolen ball. The Broncos went ahead 61-59 with 1:28 left in overtime on a jumper by Rasheka Simmons.
 
Elizabeth City State out-rebounded FSU, 48-37, and tied the game at 61 on a rebounded put-back by Iya Holley-Reid with seven seconds left.
 
Fayetteville State was 10-of-21 in free throws (47.6%) for the game. FSU was 1-of-4 in the extra period. After two missed free throws with fours seconds left, the ECSU timeout advanced their ball across half-court, which set up the game-winner.
 
The Broncos will travel to Columbia, South Carolina to take on Benedict College on Wednesday, December 1 at 7 p.m.
