Orangeburg, SC – Fayetteville State (8-4, 4-2 CIAA) traveled down to Orangeburg, SC Thursday evening and captured a 4-1 victory over Claflin University to improve its CIAA Southern Division record to 3-0 by wins of 25-17, 25-17, 21-25, and 25-14.
Claflin (6-6, 4-2, 2-1) put up a fighting effort with a total of 34 kills in the match. The Broncos had the obvious advantage with a total of 58 kills and 70 digs.
Xiamana Spikes and
Da'Nesha Miller led the match with 16 kills each. Miller had a double-double with 11 digs. She also contributed nine assists. Spikes also led in blocks with six.
Jaida Bynum put an amazing count of 31 assists and
Aeyane Mattress had 19 digs.
FSU had a 10-3 run midway through the first set which ended with a 25-17 score. The Broncos had a 5-0 run in the second set for a 14-7 lead and closed out the set with a 6-1 run and another 25-17 set.
The Panthers found their rhythm in the third set when Claflin jumped out to an early 7-3 lead. The Broncos cut down that lead to just one point, 17-16 but the Panthers broke out for a 7-2 run to go ahead 24-18. After allowing three straight points to FSU, Claflin took the win with a Bronco attack error that sealed the 25-21 set win.
Fayetteville State pulled out all the stops in the fourth and final set. The Broncos went up by as many as nine points (19-10) and ended the match with match-point 25-14.
The Broncos will host Johnson C. Smith on Monday, October 11 in Capel Arena at 6:00 pm. The CIAA Southern Division matchup will also be one of Fayetteville State's Homecoming Activities. FSU football will host the Golden Bulls on Saturday at 2 pm.
