Fayetteville State Avenges Previous Loss to Coker with 3-1 Victory

Fayetteville, NC – Fayetteville State (15-6 overall) played with a lot of pride in its 3-1 victory over Coker in Capel Arena. FSU capture the first two sets 25-21 and 25-17 before losing the third 25-19.  Thanks to the tag-team play of Da'Nesha Miller and Casandra Watson, the Broncos outplayed the Coker 25-19 in the final set.

FSU fell in defeat to the Cobras 0-3 on October 12th in Hartsville, SC. At the time, Coker was 2-15 and now sits at 3-19 overall.

CIAA Offensive Player of the Week Da'Nesha Miller led the way with another triple-double of 13 kills, 18 assists, and 13 digs. Her second of the season. Casandra Watson finished with double-digit kills with 10.  Jaida Bynum set up 23 assists and served up three aces.

Emily Everton led the match with 14 kills for the Cobras while Chelsey Blume had 11.

Fayetteville State opened the match with a 6-1 lead and 17-8 midway through. With a 20-13 lead, FSU allowed the Cobras to close the game to 20-17 following a 4-point swing and trail by one (22-21) after a 4-2 run.  After back-to-back Coker attack errors, Miller served up set-point with an ace.

The Broncos pulled away from the Cobras after the 11-10 mark with scoring spurts of 3, 4, 3, and 3 for a 25-17 victory.

Coker found some rhythm in the third set with a 6-0 run that set the score at 20-12. The FSU timeout wasn't enough to break the momentum as the Cobras was the set 25-19.

The final set was all Fayetteville State, despite the score, as the Broncos opened with a 5-1 run. A quick 4-0 spurt gave FSU a 9-3 advantage. Coker managed a comeback effort with a 5-0 run that closed the gap to 12-11 in favor of the Broncos. The comeback sparked a 4-0 runaway score that forced a Cobra timeout. Following the break, back-to-back kills by Watson would motivate the Broncos to the 25-19 victory.

Fayetteville State will host Claflin on Thursday evening in Capel Arena at 6 pm. The Panthers are 8-4 in the conference and are one game behind the Broncos at 5-1 in the division. Fayetteville State will look to maintain the Southern Division's No. 1 seed going into the CIAA Tournament on November 16th.
