Raleigh, NC – It's not Halloween yet, but Saint Augustine's threw all the tricks it had against the Fayetteville State in a key CIAA Southern Division football matchup in the George Williams Complex.
The St. Aug. Falcons (0-6 overall, 0-5 CIAA) switched to a quarterback, ran reverses, double reverses for a pass, and several other special/trick plays to open the game. For the most part, one may have thought it would turn out for the best and maybe lead to Saint Augustine's first win of the season.
Trailing 12-10 near the end of the first half, the smoke would begin to clear and so would the magic show. Fayetteville State (6-1 overall, 5-0 CIAA) scored 14 points unanswered points within the last two minutes of the half.
Donshel Jetton darted through a gap in the line to score a 12-yard touchdown with 1:24 on the clock. After forcing Saint Augustine into a quick turnover on downs, K'hari Lane avoided distress and connected with
Zachary Kellum for a three-yard touchdown for the 24-12 lead with 24 seconds left before halftime.
After intermission, the Broncos opened the second half with a 10-play, 73-yard drive that was capped with a 28-yard strike from Lane to
Tyeous Sharpe. FSU added three more points in the third quarter with a 21-yard field goal by
Elton Andrew at the 2:47 mark.
Possessing control of the ball for most of the second half, unlike the first half, Fayetteville State's
Darnell Walker scored from two yards out to end all scoring with 9:15 left in the game.
Saint Augustine's had possession of the ball for 21:31 in the first half compared to the Broncos 8:29.
The Falcons scored first from a 24-yard pass from Deandre Procter to K. Williams. On the two-point conversion,
Joshua Williams intercepted the pass attempt and returned it for a defensive score of two points.
Saint Augustine's scored on a quarterback keeper at the 10-minute mark in the second quarter.
K'hari Lane threw for 244 yards with 15 completions from 22 attempts with one interception. FSU finished with a total of 437 yards of total offense.
Keyshawn James, the reigning CIAA Defensive Lineman of the Week, led all with 11 tackles with three for a loss of 12 yards. He also had a sack for two yards and a forced fumble.
Fayetteville State is one win away from securing its spot in the CIAA Championship and the Southern Division Titleholder. FSU will host Livingstone next Saturday in the L.N. Jeralds Stadium. Kickoff is at 2 pm.
