Orangeburg, SC – Fayetteville State women's basketball hit the cruise control button early in its 73-55 CIAA Southern Division victory at Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC.
The Broncos improved to 13-8 overall and 10-2 in conference play behind an 18-point performance by
London Thompson (Lumberton, NC) and a 15-point game by
Katisha Hyman (Chocowinity, NC).
Aminata Johnson (Durham, NC) put up a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Fayetteville State had a huge first quarter with a 10-1 lead in the first five minutes and a 19-9 edge after ten minutes. The pace of the second period slowed a bit with the Broncos outscoring the Panthers 14-5; going into the locker room at halftime 33-14.
Thompson had nine points going into intermission and Thompson had 11 boards. FSU dominated the boards grabbing 31 rebounds to Claflin's 15.
Fayetteville State gained a 30-point cushion (44-14) within four minutes of the third quarter and led by 32 (60-28). The Broncos reached its largest lead of 34 (62-28) at the start of the fourth period.
FSU made more than 50% of its shots (29-of-57) and out-rebounded the Panthers 49-34.
Dashia Jackson led Claflin's effort with 17 points and 11 boards. Shakarri Mack put up 15 points and Dionna Long scored ten. The Panthers made 20 of 72 shots (27.8%).
The Broncos will return to the hardwood on Wednesday (Feb. 5) night in Salisbury, NC against Livingstone at 5:30 pm.
