Fayetteville, NC – Fayetteville State women's basketball secured a two-game lead over Johnson C. Smith in the CIAA Southern Division after defeating Winston-Salem State 68-59 in an ecstatic Capel Arena that was filling to the rafters. With the victory, the Broncos have claimed its third straight Southern Division Title and the South's No. 1 seed.
The Broncos are now 13-2 in conference play with a 10-0 divisional record with the win. WSSU dropped to 6-9 and 5-5 in the South.
Johnson C. Smith defeated Livingstone in Charlotte, 58-50, for a 11-4 CIAA record and 8-2 divisional standing. The Golden Bulls host Winston-Salem State and Shaw before receiving the South's No. 2 seed for the Tournament.
Fayetteville State will finish out the season at Shaw on Wednesday (Feb. 19) and host Saint Augustine's for senior night on Saturday (Feb. 22).
Katisha Hyman scored a game-high 18 points to help will the Broncos to victory. Ten of her points came from 14 free throws.
London Thompson led the team with nine rebounds and put up 16 points.
Shantel Bennett and
Aminata Johnson contributed 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Fayetteville State led 18-8 after the first quarter and held on to a 35-24 advantage at halftime. After the third period, the Rams had closed the gap down to four (47-43) and was down by five twice, late in the game. The Broncos led 63-58 with 1:20 left in the game.
London Thompson went on a 7-0 run by herself to secure the victory in the last minute of the game.
