Raleigh, NC – Fayetteville State women's basketball (12-8 overall; 9-2 CIAA) pulled off a feisty 48-45 victory over Saint Augustine's (8-13; 3-8 CIAA) at the Emory Gymnasium in Raleigh, North Carolina within the final moments of the game.
Aminata Johnson, a native of Durham, NC, led the game with 14 points with six rebounds.
Katisha Hyman (Chocowinity, NC) scored 11 points and
Chantel Williams (Charlotte, NC) had ten with 6-of-8 free throws made.
London Thompson (Lumberton, NC) grabbed a game high 14 rebounds.
Fayetteville State made 11-of-18 free throws over the Falcons 9-of-16 and the Broncos production in the paint was 30 points over the Falcons' 20.
The Broncos jumped to an early ten-point lead in the first quarter with a 10-0 run following jump ball. Saint Augustine's closed ground to tie the game at 18 in the second quarter with 2:32 left and trailed 22-21 at halftime. FSU pushed the lead to six (32-26) midway through the third quarter and held to a 37-33 advantage through three.
The intense battle carried over into the fourth quarter with the Falcons taking its second lead of the game (43-42) on an Angela Caraballo three-pointer with 2:34 left in the game.
Hyman's free throw with 2 minutes left tied the game at 42 and steal, offensive board and put-back by
Shantel Bennett (Sanford, NC) gave FSU a 45-43 lead with 18 seconds left. A free throw by
Chantel Williams set the score at 46-43 but a layup by SAU's Kamya Renwicks set up the final moments of the energetic game with seven seconds left.
Following a quick foul, Williams return to the charity stripe resulted in the 48-45 victory.
Kiana Clark led the Falcons with ten points with five rebounds while Milequa Eason and Caraballo finished with nine points each.
Fayetteville State will travel to Orangeburg, SC on Monday (Feb. 3
rd) to face Claflin University in a 5:30 tip-off.
