Charlotte, N.C. – Fayetteville State lost a pair of CIAA divisional games to Johnson C. Smith over the weekend, 4-6 and 2-5, at the Biddleville Park in Charlotte, N.C.
The Broncos were off to a 2-0 lead after three innings in the first game of the doubleheader when
Mikayla Jackson (Spring Lake, N.C.) scored on an error by the catcher and
Madison Mendoza (Apple Valley, Calif.) singled to bring home
Nikki Brown (Independence, Ky.)
The Golden Bulls hit a two-run double in the fourth inning to tie the game at 2-all, until JCSU spotted FSU a run with a bases loaded walk in the fifth inning to trail 3-2. Johnson C. Smith then captured a 5-3 lead from the bat of Paige Brickington who brought in three runs from one single.
Mallory Carpenter (Emerald Isle, N.C.) closed the gap to one (5-4) with a double that allowed Mendoza to score.
Johnson C. Smith closed out the game with a unearned run in the sixth inning and two ground-outs and a strike-out in the seventh.
In the second game, FSU scored the first two runs of the game
Grace Vincent scored on a fielder's choice and Carpenter crossed home on the same play by an error committed by the short-shot.
Johnson C. Smith tied the game (2-2) in the bottom of the second inning and took a 3-2 lead after a run in the fifth. The Golden Bulls then closed out the game 5-2 with a pair of runs in the sixth.
Madison Mendoza finished the twin bill with four hits while
Nikki Brown and
Mallory Carpenter followed with three.
Mendoza took the loss in the circle after pitching six innings with 32 batters faced. The six runs allowed came from five hits. Five of the runs were unearned. Madison walked seven batters and struck out three.
Ashlyn Zook was the pitcher for the second game. She also faced 32 batters in six innings and allowed five runs from ten hits. Zook walked two batters and struck out one.
Fayetteville State will host Shaw University on Saturday, April 13 in a Divisional Doubleheader at the Lamon Street Park. Game times are slated for 2 and 4 p.m.
