Elizabeth City, N.C. – The Fayetteville State softball program picked up its second conference win with a 5-2 victory over host Elizabeth City State at the South Park Complex during the annual CIAA Round-up this past Sunday, March 17.
The Broncos improve to 2-15 and 2-3 in conference play as the Vikings fall to 3-12 and 3-3 in the CIAA.
Madison Mendoza scored 2 runs with 3 hits. Her third hit on the fourth plate appearance was a home run over left field. Mendoza also won the game in the circle with 7 innings pitched and 33 batters faced. Although allowing 10 hits, she struck out 4 batters and walked three. With the help of the field, the Broncos only allowed 2 Vikings to score.
Fayetteville State scored its first run in the opening half of the game with Nicole Brown scored an unearned run on a throwing error by the Vikings third baseman.
Cheyene Ingram tallied the Broncos first RBI when she singled to right field to FSU a 2-0 lead.
In the second inning,
Alex White increased the lead to 3-0 when her single hit allowed another RBI.
Elizabeth City State was spotted a run when D'Asy Wilson was walked with bases loaded.
In the top of the Broncos' sixth inning, Ingram scored from second base when
Timmya Williams grounded out to the second baseman. Mendoza gave FSU a 5-0 lead in the seventh inning with a homer to left field.
The Vikings scored their second run of the game on a bases loaded fielder's choice. Shea Vaccaro avoided the out when the play was made at second base.
Fayetteville State will close out the roundup schedule with a contest against Bowie State.
