Elizabeth City, N.C. – Fayetteville State put the bat to the ball for a season high 17 hits in its 13-1 CIAA victory over Bowie State at the South Park Sports Complex in Elizabeth City, N.C.
The Broncos improve to 3-3 in the CIAA standings and 3-15 overall on the final day of the CIAA Round-up. Bowie State is 3-8 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
Madison Mendoza was 4-of-4 at the plate with 4 RBI and 3 runs. She remains the homerun queen for the Broncos with another homer in the first inning.
In fact, Mendoza just missed her first grand slam.
With the first two batters of the game on bases, Nicole Brown singled to left field to bring the lead-off batter
Alex White home for a 1-0 lead.
Fourth in the lineup and batting cleanup, Mendoza nailed a homer through left field for a three-run RBI and a 4-0 lead.
Fayetteville State tacked on five more runs in the top of the second inning for a 9-0 lead. Facing two outs, White singled and stole second base.
Cheyene Ingram doubled through the left side for White to score and advance to third when Nicole Brown singled. The runs started to roll in with Mendoza's single RBI.
Mikayla Jackson hit a double for an RBI and
Mallory Carpenter scored on a passed ball.
Alex White led the third inning with an RBI double to left field and a score on a wild pitch.
Timmya Williams had an RBI single in the fourth inning to give Fayetteville State a 12-0 lead.
Bowie State scored its only run of the game when Tiffany Bearns hit a home run through the left side in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the Broncos final at bat of the game (5
th inning), Mendoza singled to center field to reach base. She then stole second base and continued home on the failed pickoff.
Ashlyn Zook was the winning pitcher with five innings in the circle and 18 batters faced. She threw 5 strikeouts and allowed 2 hits. Zook did not walk any batters and only one run was earned.
Fayetteville State will scrimmage Paul D. Camp Community College on Tuesday, March 19 before traveling to Orangeburg, South Carolina for the Broncos first divisional contest against Claflin University on Saturday, March 23.
