Story Links

Fayetteville, N.C. – Fayetteville State (6-18 overall, 5-12 CIAA) may have played its best game of the season, but the Broncos came up short 65-62 in the final minutes to Shaw (14-12, 9-8) on Senior Night.

Fayetteville State celebrated two seniors, JaQuel Richmond (Greensboro, N.C.) and DeAngelo Harris (Fayetteville, N.C.), prior to taking on the CIAA Southern Divisional leader.

The Broncos held its own in the first half with a tied ball-game (28-28) at halftime.

Fayetteville State kept the game in reach with a two-point deficit (61-59) with a little over a minute left in the game, after Joshua Bryant scored his 10th point.

Two pairs of free throws would give Shaw a six-point (65-59) lead with 24 seconds left but a three by Denzell Hosch (Shelby, N.C.) would cut that lead in half with 18 seconds to go. After a missed Bear free throw, a Mark Burton three attempt would rim out securing the Bears the victory.

JaQuel Richmond closed out his final game in Capel Arena with a game-high 22 points. Hosch finished with 11. Joshua Bryant added 5 assists to his 10 points.

DaVaughn Kelsie led the way for the Bears with 19 points with Amir Hinton finishing with 16. Derrick Randolph scored 12.

With a three-way tie in the bottom the division, Fayetteville State will travel to Raleigh with an opportunity to break its tie with Saint Augustine's. Game time has been adjusted to an 6:00 p.m. start.

Johnson C. Smith shares a 4-7 divisional record with the Broncos and Falcons.
