Fayetteville, N.C. – Three seniors were committed to enjoying senior night in Felton J. Capel Arena.
"We came out ready to play," said senior forward
Yakima Clifton (Durham, N.C.). "It was senor night and we definitely had to have fun. We had to put a foot in them first. We picked up the tempo and did what we were supposed to do."
Fayetteville State (18-7 overall, 13-4 CIAA) improved to 10-1 in the CIAA Southern Division with a 73-62 victory over Shaw University (7-20 overall, 2-15 CIAA). The Broncos jumped to a 25-10 first quarter lead and held a 35-23 advantage at halftime.
Yakima Clifton scored 13 of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter.
Shantel Bennett (Sanford, N.C.) trailed with 11 points with senior
Chinwendu Maduegbunam (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Katisha Hyman (Chocowinity, N.C.) chipping in 10. The Broncos third senior
Brittany Drumgoole (Kinston, N.C.) had a game-high 5 assists.
Shaw cut the gap to seven points (38-31) with 7:50 remaining in the third quarter but FSU quickly pushed its lead back up to 18 (53-35). The Broncos held its largest lead of 19 points (71-52) with 4:24 left in the game.
"We came out the gate really strong, scored a lot of points, and continued to maintain our level of play and it turned to be a really good night or us," said Head Coach
Serena King-Coleman.
"It has been a special year for us to repeat as Divisional Champs. We have a great coaching staff and great kids who have bought into the team mentality. And, it showed tonight because we had four players scoring in double figures tonight."
Fayetteville State will travel to Raleigh, N.C. on Saturday, February 23 to close out the regular season against Saint Augustine's at 4:00 p.m.
