Last-Second Field Goal Lifts St. Augustine’s to a 23-21 Victory over Fayetteville State

Fayetteville, NC – Fayetteville State had a lot to cheer about when senior Chris Brooks (Winston-Salem, NC) scored on a three-yard touchdown pass from Richard Latimer (Charlotte, NC) with less than a minute left in the game. The Broncos gained a 21-20 lead after trailing 13-7 at halftime to Saint Augustine's.
 
In a third consecutive game with a slow start, the other shoe dropped when Saint Augustine Andre Labat kicked a 26-yard field goal with five seconds left to capture a 23-21 victory for Saint Augustine's. Aakiel Greer set up the game winning field goal with a leaping 39-yard reception at the Broncos ten-yard line.
 
Fayetteville State is reduced to a one-game lead over the CIAA Southern Division with a conference record of 4-1 (6-2 overall). Winston-Salem State and Shaw are currently tied for second with a CIAA record of 3-2.
 
The victory by the Falcons improves them to 2-3 in conference play and 2-6 overall. The divisional title and berth into the CIAA Championship game is determined by the highest winning percentage in conference games within the division.
 
On a day that FSU celebrated its ten seniors during pregame activities, Stevie Green led the game with 132 yards rushing and two touch downs. He set the Broncos final scoring drive with 48 yards rushing on six carries. The drive covered 48 yards in eight plays. He scored FSU's first two touchdowns with a two-yard and six-yard run.
 
Richard Latimer threw for a total of 105 yards with 12-of-19 completed passes. He also threw up three interceptions and was sacked once.
 
The Falcons' D'Ontre Gilliard threw 17 of 37 for 238 yards while the run game accumulated 130 yards on the ground. Anthony Berry hauled in five receptions for 104 yards.
 
Fayetteville State will travel to Salisbury next weekend to take on Livingstone for the Blue Bears' Homecoming. Kickoff will be at 1:30 pm.
