FAYETTEVLLE, N.C. – Fayetteville State knew it was going to be a dogfight today in Felton J. Capel Arena with a CIAA Southern Division clash against Winston-Salem State University.
Brittany Drumgoole and
Katisha Hyman teamed up for 16 points each to defeat the Rams (10-8; 6-3 CIAA) to help Fayetteville State improve its record to 11-7 and 6-4 in conference play.
The duo ignited a 9-2 run late in the fourth period to take a 50-48 lead with 2:27 left in the game. Drumgoole accounted for six of those points during the run.
Laichelle Sparrow, who finished with 14 points helped the Rams close a three-point gap to a one-point (52-51) with a layup in the paint with 27 seconds left; but Hyman closed out the game with 4-of-4 free throws in the final seconds.
Fayetteville State jumped to an early 8-2 lead in the first quarter at the 5:27 mark. By the close of the first, the Broncos held an 18-10 advantage.
FSU hit its challenges in the second quarter with only two points scored. Chi-Chi Maduegbunam hit a layup at 7:51 for a 20-13 lead. Winston-Salem State took advantage of the scoring lull to take a 24-20 lead, with the 11-0 run, into the locker room at halftime.
The Rams reached its largest lead of the game when Amaya Tucker hit a three with 6:03 left in the quarter for a 34-22 (+12) lead.
Drumgoole hit a three of her own with 1:30 on the clock to cap a 11-0 run by the Broncos to trial by one (34-33).
WSSU managed a five-point lead (46-41) with 6:18 left until Hyman nailed her three with 4:12 left to cut the edge to one (48-47).
The Bronco shot the ball better than the Rams in all categories and capitalized on the turnovers with 19 points. WSSU committed 24 turnovers for the game. Sixteen were committed in the first half with eight coming in the second.
Fayetteville State will travel to Raleigh on Wednesday, January 30
th for a 6:00 pm matchup against Shaw University.
