Drumgoole’s Dagger Gives FSU a 71-68 Win Over Livingstone

Salisbury, NC – Brittany Drumgoole nailed a three-point dagger with three seconds left in New Trent Gymnasium in Salisbury North Carolina to give Fayetteville State a 71-68 victory over Livingstone College.

The Broncos (10-7 overall, 5-4 CIAA, and 2-1 in the Southern Division) were trailing by five (64-59) late in the fourth quarter (3:42) until Katishia Hyman hit her third three-pointer which gave her 17 points for the game. Yakima Clifton, who scored 11 points, hit a jumper to tie the game at 64 and a second in the paint for a two-point lead (66-64) with 2:10 remaining. FSU would extend the lead to four (68-64) before the Blue Bears could counter the momentum swing.

Livingstone (3-15, 0-8, 0-2) scored a basket in the low key and nailed a pair of free throws to tie the game again (68-68) with 16 seconds left on the clock.

After a Bronco timeout, which gave Fayetteville State possession at mid-court, Drumgoole ran the offense from the top of the key. As she swayed to the left side of the court, Drumgoole passed the ball to Hyman for a potential three in the bottom left corner, but as the defense shifted, Hyman kicked it back out for Brittany to pull the long-range shot that extends the Blue Bears losing streak to 12 games.

The basket by Drumgoole was her second of the game as she finished with three points scored, five rebounds with four assists and two steals.

Clifton finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Shantel Bennett finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Five other Broncos finished with five rebounds as FSU won the battle of boards 46-35. Fayetteville State shot better from the floor with 41.5% (27-65) and free throws with 92.9% (13-14).

Livingstone hit 9 three-pointers for the game but shot 33.3% in field goals and made 19-of-22 free throws (86.4%).

Fayetteville State will host Winston-Salem State on Saturday, January 26th at 2:00 p.m. in Capel Arena.
