Fayetteville, NC – Fayetteville State ran out of gas in an 80-73 overtime loss to the defending CIAA Champs Virginia Union in Capel Arena.
"The guys came out and played a heck of a game for 36 minutes," said FSU Head Coach
Ken Spencer. "We lost a little steam there in overtime and they [Virginia Union] were able to pull out a big victory. We kind of let it slip away."
The Broncos (2-10 overall, 1-4 CIAA) had a 17-point (60-43) lead with 7:31 left in regulation and a 13-point (71-58) lead with 3:06 left when the steam started dissipating.
Virginia Union (7-7 overall, 4-1 CIAA) went on a 13-0 run to tie the game at 71 at the end of regulation. FSU missed four field goals and turned the ball over twice in the final two-and-a-half minutes.
JaQuel Richmond pulled a game-winner, which rimmed out before the buzzer.
"When you have 21 turnovers, it's gonna be tough to win," said Coach Spencer.
The Broncos made 1 of 7 shots in overtime.
Mark Burton led the program with 17 points and Markeise Crutchfield finished with a season high 14 points.
JaQuel Richmond had 12 points.
Will Jenkins led the game with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan White also had a double-double of 17 points and 13 boards. Terrell Leach finished with 14 points while Demarius Pitts collected 10.
Fayetteville State will host Bowie State on Monday, January 14
th at 7:30 pm. General admission for the game is $12.
