Petersburg, VA – Fayetteville State walked away from the CIAA Volleyball Roundup Event #1 in Petersburg, Virginia with something to cheer about.
The Broncos (1-7 Overall, 1-2 CIAA) defeated Elizabeth City State 3-1 in the final match of the roundup by sets of 25-17, 24-26, 25-21, and 25-12 for its first victory of the season.
Chynna Hunt (Summerville, SC) led the charge with 15 kills with Diamond Holmes (Raeford, NC) following closely with 11. Nia Richardson (Franklinton, NC) provided 24 assists and Meagan Greene (Orangeburg, SC) was all over the court with 31 digs.
In the first two matches of the roundup, FSU lost 3-0 decisions to Chowan and Virginia State.
In the victory over the Vikings (0-9, 0-4 CIAA) FSU broke away from a 14-14 tie in the first set with two kills by Hunt, a kill by Holmes and three attack errors by ECSU for a 20-15 lead. A barrage of Viking errors would end with a 25-17 set for Fayetteville State.
FSU controlled most of the second set until ECSU rallied back from a 24-21 deficit following two Bronco attack errors and a FSU timeout. The Vikings tied the set at 24 by-way of a kill from Kaylee Williams and captured a one-point advantage with a service ace by D'Aysa Wilson. Elizabeth City State won the set 26-24 with a kill by Williams.
After a close 25-21 battle in the third set, Fayetteville State secured the win with an impressive 25-12 fourth set.
Nakia McKinnie (Niceville, FL) also finished with double-digit assists with 17 and Deja Middleton (Huntersville, NC) added 14 digs.
Fayetteville State opened the roundup with a close 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-22) loss to Chowan (2-5, 2-2 CIAA). Hunt led the attack with 9 kills with 15 assists from Ziyanna Canty (Charlotte, NC). Green had 10 digs.
The Broncos also suffered a 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-11) loss to host Virginia State (9-4, 3-1 CIAA). Brandye Cropper (Concord, NC) had the most kills for FSU with four. Alexis Hollis (Apex, NC) finished with 11 digs.
