Yakima Clifton Sparks Run to Put Away Elizabeth City State, 69-59

Elizabeth City, NC – After trailing 37-31 at halftime to Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State (5-4 overall) used a 9-2 run to close out the Vikings, 69-59, in the R.L. Vaughan Center.
 
The Broncos, who improved to 2-1 in the CIAA, captured the final lead of the game with three seconds left in the third quarter. Brittany Drumgoole nailed a jumper with an assist by Yakima Clifton.  
 
Clifton sparked the game winning 9-2 run with 3:33 remaining after converting an old fashion three-point play. Yakima scored five of her game-leading 18 points during the span. The one minute forty-nine second run propelled FSU to a 69-56 lead with a little over two minutes left in the game.
 
Aminata Johnson, who finished with 13 points, closed out the run with four points. Katisha Hyman also scored 18 points and dished out five dimes. Clifton also led the Broncos with nine boards.
 
Fayetteville State held a better 43.5% (27 of 62) shooting from the field and 70.6% (12 of 17) in free throws over the 7-and-5 ECSU Vikings. The Broncos made 50% (16 of 32) of its shots in the second half alone. Elizabeth City State (2-2 in the CIAA) shot 34.5% (20 of 58) in field goals and 60% (12 of 20) from the line.
 
Devona Stell led ECSU with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Jalyn Brown scored 13 points while Asia Deal and Naterria Luster both netted 12 points.
 
Fayetteville State finished its three-game CIAA Northern Division road trip with a 2-1 record with back-to-back wins over Virginia State and ECSU. The Broncos lost to Chowan on the front end of the schedule.
 
The Broncos will open the 2019 calendar with two non-conference home contests against Augusta (January 2nd) and Salem International (Jan. 5th). FSU will return to cross divisional conference play on January 10th and 12th when Lincoln (Pa.) and Virginia Union visit the Felton J. Capel Arena. All mentioned games will fall under the Broncos Community Month, where FREE admission will be granted to all patrons.
