FSU Upsets Virginia State 51-41 for First CIAA Win

Petersburg, Va. – On a three-game road trip, Fayetteville State pulled off a 51-41 upset victory over 7-and-3 (overall) Virginia State to even its conference record at 1-1.
 
The Broncos (4-4 overall) won the battle on the boards, out rebounding the Trojans 52-41. Although FSU had three more offensive boards (18-15) than VSU, Fayetteville State scored 14 second-chance points to the Trojans seven. FSU also converted 14 VSU turnovers into 12 points.
 
Brittany Drumgoole led the Broncos with 10 points while Yakima Clifton tipped in 9 and pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds.
 
Fayetteville State trailed 10-6 after the first quarter but captured the lead after a 10-2 run to lead 16-12 in the middle of the second. The Broncos held on to a 22-16 halftime lead while limiting the Trojans to 6 points in the period.
 
Virginia State challenged FSU in the third quarter with an 11-point performance, but the Broncos outpaced them by one (12 points) and led 34-27 with one quarter remaining. Fayetteville State led by as many as 15 (49-34) with 2:47 left in the game.
 
Chrisanna Green led the game for the Trojans with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Autumn Hopson and Yazmen Hannah contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively.
 
FSU shot a better 36.4% (20-55) from the field to the Trojans 22.2% (12-54) but made 10-of-24 free throws (41.7%) to VSU's 50% (11-22).
 
Fayetteville State will travel to Elizabeth City, N.C. to take on the 7-and-4 Vikings (2-1 CIAA), who are on a three-game win-streak, on Monday, December 17th at 5:30 pm. The contest will be streamed live on the CIAA Sports Network at www.theciaasn.com/ecsu/.
