Broncos Sweep Winston-Salem State 3-0 for 2nd Seed in CIAA Volleyball Tournament

Fayetteville N.C. – Fayetteville State University needed to beat Winston-Salem State by three sets to move up in the CIAA Volleyball Standings from the number three position to the second seed of the upcoming CIAA Volleyball Championship Tournament.
 
Winston-Salem State defeated the Broncos 3-1 on October 8th which meant that FSU needed the split and to break the CIAA tie breaker scenario with the most set wins.
 
On a Sunday, after the Rams football team shocked the Broncos with a 51-21 win in Luther Nick Jeralds Stadium, the volleyball team extracted a little revenge to Winston-Salem State with set wins of 25-15, 25- 21, and 25-21.
 
Fayetteville State (14-11 overall; 14-4 CIAA) will now host Chowan University (11-16 overall; 11-6 CIAA) in the CIAA Quarterfinal Round on Tuesday, November 6th in Capel Arena at 6:00 p.m. The loss drops the Rams to 15-14 overall and 14-4 in conference play. The Rams will travel to Richmond, Va. To take on the Panthers of Virginia Union.
 
Freshman Diamond Holmes put up 11 kills and two service aces to lead the Broncos. Teeya McLean followed with nine kills and three blocks. Nakia McKinnie contributed 27 assists.
 
Danyale Berry led the Rams effort with 16 kills with 21 assists Brittany Carpenter.
 
FSU ran away with the first set 25-15. Winston-Salem State held close in the second set trailing 21-22 until Chynna Hunt and Teeya McLean both knocked down kills. The set was won after a Samantha Conde attack was blocked by McLean.
 
Winston-Salem State took the early advantage in the third set with a 6-2 lead until the Broncos evened things up at 9-9. FSU captured a small lead until play opened up after the 18-17 score.
 
Diamond Holmes and Jessica Williams had kills that gave FSU a 20-17 lead. A service ace by Holmes set the Broncos up for a 21-17 advantage. Two more kills by Williams put the set at 23-18 and a kill by McLean had Capel Arena rocking with the 25-21 set and match victory.
