FSU Broncos upset Divisional Leader Shaw, 3-1

Fayetteville, NC – The Fayetteville State volleyball team gave the CIAA Southern Division leader Shaw University all it could handle tonight in Capel Arena as the Broncos (11-11 overall; 11-4 CIAA) defeated the Bears (19-8 overall; 15-2 CIAA) 3-1. Three Broncos tallied 13 kills to win the best of five sets by 19-25, 25-19, 25-21, and 25-23.

Diamond Holmes led the Broncos with a double-double of 13 kills from 40 total attacks and 14 digs. Jessica Williams had 13 kills from 26 attacks while Bojo Jada also netted 13 kills on 21 total attacks. Teeya McLean finished with 12 kills and four blocks and two service aces. Chynna Hunt was the last Broncos with double-digit kills with 11.  Ziyanna Canty let the crowd on fire with five service aces. Nakia McKinnie was the main setter with 50 assists.

The first set was closely played with three tied scores until the 17-17 score. Shaw's Saraya Klink put down a kill that led to five unanswered points by the Bears. A kill by Bojo Jada stopped the run but two consecutive attack errors set up the match-point at 24-18.  After a kill by Jessica Williams, Shaw won the set with another kill by Klink.

Shaw took an early 10-4 lead in the second set until the Broncos found a rallying moment. Jada sparked a nine-point run with a kill and was followed by Williams. That is when Ziyanna Canty served up her five service aces. With a 13-10 lead, FSU would maintain its momentum to win the set 25-19.

The third set went back-and-forth until a 17-17 tie. A kill by Teeya McLean and a service ace Nia Richardson forced Shaw to call a timeout. Immediate after the intercession, McLean laid down another kill for a 20-17 Bronco lead. The set would battle on until McLean ended it with a service ace for a 25-21 2-set advantage.

The Bears would come undone in the fourth set after a 2-2 tie. Fayetteville State led the remainder of the set but had to fight a comeback effort that had the Shaw trailing 23-22. Keveesha Wattley, who finished with a match-high 15 kills, was giving life to the Bears. After a kill by Diamond Holmes, which gave FSU a 24-22 advantage, Wattley had a kill of her own to keep the Bears within one (24-23). Thanks to a nice set-assist by Nakia McKinnie, Teeya McLean sent Capel Arena into a frenzy with a match-point upsetting kill.

Fayetteville State will play host to CIAA newcomer Claflin on tomorrow night (October 30th) at 6:00 p.m. The Broncos will travel to Charlotte on Thursday to take on Johnson C. Smith and host Winston-Salem State in a regular-season finale on Sunday, November 4th at 1:00 pm.
