FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Playing their ninth match in nine days, the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos gave a valiant effort in a 3-1 defeat to UNC Pembroke on Monday night.

A day after playing three matches in two days while hosting the second half of the CIAA Roundup, the Lady Broncos were able to take a set from the Lady Braves, who had last played a match on Saturday, their second since Sept. 11. Pembroke was able to take an early advantage and led by two sets before taking the match by the scores of 25-22, 25-17, 20-25 and 25-20.

Fayetteville State (7-3), after playing the first half of the Roundup last weekend and then again during the week, has run a gauntlet of a schedule. The Lady Broncos play their 10th match in 10 days on Tuesday when they travel to Livingstone for a 6 p.m. match. After that, FSU is off for a week.

UNC Pembroke (8-3) was led by Rebecca Morgan's game-high 11 kills while Shay Peterson added nine kills. Heather Bolwerk had a team-high 27 assists while Marissa Baker led all players with 18 digs. Morgan and Bolwerk also had seven digs apiece.

Samantha Meeks (Sr., Laurinburg, N.C.) led Fayetteville State with nine kills while Jessica Hardy (Fr., Fayetteville, N.C.) and Ifeyinwa Nwokolo (So., Greensboro, N.C.) had six each. Achari Mainor (Sr., Antioch, Calif.) led all players with 28 assists to go with a team-high 16 digs. JaMisha Jordan (Fr., Fayetteville, N.C.) added 11 digs.

Pembroke used an early 5-0 run in the first set to take an edge that it held throughout the opening game. FSU never trailed by more than five points after the early spurt, but it couldn't manage to pull ahead.

In the second set, a tight game opened up a touch when the Braves used a 5-1 run to take a 20-14 lead, an advantage the Braves were able to hold on to.

Fayetteville State controlled much of the third set, getting late kills from Nwokolo and Hardy before a Meeks kill ended it in favor of the Lady Broncos.

The fourth game was close throughout with six ties and three lead changes.
